Corinth Interpretive Center – Corinth, Mississippi

Cornith Civil War Center.jpgCorinth Interpretive Center – Corinth, Mississippi

This small Mississippi town of less than 400 people in 1860 was initially known as Cross City due to it’s location of the Memphis and Charleston and the Mobile and Ohio Railroads during the 1850’s. It was at this location that on April 6-7, 1862 the terrible battle of Shiloh was fought.

The center traces the story of Corinth and the Civil War from secession through Reconstruction.  It includes two state of the art films on Shiloh and Corinth, plus interactive interpretive exhibits and bronze work.

The battlefield looks very much like it did in 1862.  It is kept in as historically accurate shape as possible in terms of roads, fields, and wood lines.  The biggest difference is the undergrowth which is much thicker than it would have been then.

The cannons that are on the grounds, all 229 pieces of artillery in the park, are original Civil War pieces.

More than 110,000 soldiers fought at Shiloh and 23,746 became casualties.  This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War up to that time.
