If you like museums, then Jackson will be a treat for you. There are quite a few there and you can plan to spend a day going through them. One of the favorites is the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. It has indoor and outdoor exhibits with quite a few of Mississippi’s living organisms. They have a 100,000 gallon aquarium and a greenhouse. Spend time in the native plant garden and a large natural area as well.
Next on your museum tour should be the Old Capital Museum of Mississippi History. Here you will find exhibits that outline the history of Jackson. The time period is from the colonial period to the Civil Rights Movement. The actual building is a landmark itself. It has Greek Revival architecture and is listed as a national historic landmark. The Smith Robertson Museum was a building that housed Jackson’s first African American school. Now you can walk through and see civil rights movement memorabilia. Finally, make sure you stop but the Mississippi Museum of Art. It is home to the largest art collection in Mississippi. Some of the area’s finest talents are displayed here as well as talented artists from all over the country. Some of the permanent pieces are 3000 of the most beautiful pieces that span over thousands of years.
