Jackson Zoo - Jackson, Mississippi

Visit all of the Animals at the Jackson Zoo.  The Jackson Zoo is located in Jackson, Mississippi, and it has been educating and entertaining visitors from around the nation for nearly ninety years. Today, more than 200,000 people per year visit the zoo. The zoo, opened in 1919, is located on 110 acres of land in Livingston Park, with 52 acres already developed. It is the second largest zoo in the state.

The zoo houses nearly 800 animals from more than 120 different species, many of which are endangered, including snow leopards, the Sumatran tiger, African elephants, brown haired spider monkey, and more.

Some of the most popular exhibits in the zoo are the African Rain Forest Boardwalk, the African Savannah, Wilderness Mississippi, Jewels of South America and the Discovery Zoo. Just about every type of animal that anyone would want to see can be found in these exhibits, which painstakingly recreate the animals’ environment, just as it would be in the wilderness.

In the African Savannah, visitors will be able to see some of their favorite animals, such as lions and African elephants. In the Wilderness Mississippi area, guests will be treated to some animals that they might find wandering through their own back yard from time to time. Be sure to take the whole day to check out all of the wonderful exhibits and animals.

The Jackson Zoo also has several rides that both children and adults will like. Visitors can ride the carousel, or the train, which will take them around the park. These two rides do cost extra, but they are well worth the small fee. The carousel, a relatively new addition to the zoo, is hand carved and has replicas of a number of endangered animals. People can ride atop a lion, elephant, zebra, a catfish, and more.

The zoo also has a number of places where people can grab a bite to eat and something cool to drink throughout the day. Food stands are scattered throughout the zoo, or you can stop at the Elephant House Café or the Cool Cats Hut (in the summer). You can even pack a picnic lunch, which you can enjoy in Livingston Park if you wish.

Make sure you stop by the Jackson Zoo Trading Company as well. You can pick up some souvenirs by which you can remember your trip.

The zoo is open daily from 8AM – 4PM; however, the zoo is closed on Christmas Day. Admission to the zoo is quite affordable. Adults pay $6, seniors 65 and older pay $5.40, children 12 and under are $3, and those under 2 are free.
