Life-size displays of the state’s natural habitats, 100,000 gallons of aquarium exhibits housing more than 200 species, and 30,000 square feet of permanent exhibits provide plenty of sights to see. The 1700 square foot greenhouse, also called “The Swamp” displays naturally-occurring flora and fauna.
The Dragonflye Shoppe holds hundreds of souvenirs to take home with you, and the library provides research and learning opportunities. The museum also houses a 200-seat auditorium for nature-related lectures by industry experts.
As the largest collection of Mississippi vertebrate specimens and freshwater mussels, locals also find a constantly changing educational environment at the museum. Current special exhibits include “Dinosaurs!” with simulated robots and natural specimens of pre-historic animal life believed to once inhabit the earth. Future planned exhibits include “Sustainable Choices”, a special tribute to eco-friendly living and energy conservation.
The Discovery Room and Kids Club give the younger generation a chance to experience endangered species specimens firsthand. Summer camps and special children’s activities encourage a growing interest in the natural habitats of the state’s ecosystems.
Storytime is held on a daily basis in the museum, and nature-based lectures by field professionals create up-to-date information on current species efforts and discoveries. The Creature Feature and Fish Feeding activities provide additional opportunities for children to interact with the native Mississippi animals.
Museum efforts to extend natural education curriculums to local schools and traveling groups are an ongoing activity. Several students visit the museum during summer activity camps and special exhibits.
The Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, Mississippi attracts more than 150,000 visitors annually. Admission for adults is $5, children 3-18 years is $3, and seniors over 60 years is $4.
