The Vicksburg National Military Park, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, was the site of a Civil War battle fought from May 18 to July 4, 1863. The park has reconstructed forts, trenches, and more that are like those used during that long siege. Congress established the park on February 21, 1899.

Today, countless visitors come to the Vicksburg National Military Park to learn about the battle fought there, as well as about other elements of the Civil War. People who come to the park will find that there are plenty of things to do.

Guests to the Vicksburg National Military Park will be able to find a number of other interesting exhibits including cannons, a hospital room where people can learn about Civil War era medicine, military artifacts, and much more. In fact, there are well over a thousand different historical locations at the park.

The Visitor Center

Everyone will want to start his or her visit at the center. They will be able to find general information about the area, as well as plenty of historical information about the site. Visitors will also be able to see an interesting orientation film, which covers a variety of topics regarding the Civil War. You can also visit the bookstore and pick up some reading material to learn even more about the battles fought and the lives lost in the Civil War.

The USS Cairo Museum and Gunboat

This museum gives visitors information on some of the naval battles fought during the Civil War, including an actual gunboat that you can tour. You will find another bookstore here, as well as plenty of interesting exhibits. Visitors will see quite a few personal items that belonged to sailors, as well as medical supplies, cookware, and an assortment of weapons. Guests can also watch a short video about the boat, including the sinking, discovery, and the operation to salvage the vessel.

Families may even wish to bring a picnic lunch, as there are easily accessible picnic areas.

The Tour Road

Some will also choose to take the Tour Road, a sixteen-mile stretch that encompasses the Union and Confederate siege lines. It also has several other roadways that connect to it, and explorers will be able to find fifteen different tour stops, markers, and exhibits. Hiking trails are also available.
