In 1859 Smith Coffee Daniel II began construction of Windsor which was completed in 1861.  Slave labor was used for the basic construction of the home.  Skilled carpenters were brought in from New England to some of the woodwork; the iron stairs, column capitals and balustrades were manufactured in St. Louis and shipped down the Mississippi to the Port of Bruinsburg which was several miles west of Windsor.  The total cost of the mansion was $175,000 in 1861!!  Well over 3 Million dollars today.

Travel to Gulfport, Mississippi

Gulfport, Mississippi.jpgMany people love to shop on vacation.  In fact, lots of people plan their vacation around shopping.  If you are headed to Mississippi and are looking for a great place to shop, you must go to Gulfport and hit the Prime Outlets.  There is something there for everyone and the prices are fantastic.  Bargain shopping is what everyone loves, so get your map out and start planning your trip.

Gulfport is right in between Biloxi and New Orleans.  The shops are located right off the highway so you can spot them a mile away.  They are open every day of the week, so you have plenty of time to hit every store.  Some of the shops that you will find in the Prime Outlets are the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, Coach Factory, Banana Republic, Nike Factory Store and Ann Taylor Factory Store.  If you are shopping for your little ones you will be amazed at the discount prices at Strasburg Children and Gymboree Outlet.

While you are shopping in Gulfport, you may get a little hungry.  There is plenty to eat at the Prime Outlets.  They have everything from pizza to hot dogs.  If your sweet side is calling your name, stop into Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and have some dessert.  You can spend an entire day there without having to leave for anything.  

After your few days of taking in the outlets stores are over, don’t fear, there is still much more to do in Gulfport.  If you want to have some fun in the sun, you can take in a ship island excursion.  Ship Island is about 11 miles off the coast.  There you can find some of the last underdeveloped barrier islands in America.  You can swim on the beaches and go shelling.  Take a 22 mile round trip to Ship Island and enjoy the beautiful water and the clean air.  You can also visit historic Fort Massachusetts.  You can take a boat their on your own, or you can take a guided trip there to learn all about it.  The ferry service can provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all your family.  They even have a snack bar.

After your ferry trip, you can rent umbrellas or beach chair, and hang out on the beach for the day.  Swim, snorkel and play the day away.  Take a walk along the one third mile boardwalk or picnic under one of the many shelters.  There are lots of things to do in the area. In fact, Ship Island was named as one of the top 50 best island beaches in America.  The island has changed since Hurricane Katrina came through but it is still a very popular spot.  Pack your bags and head to Gulfport, MS.
