Touring Longwood is in every way an exercise in the observation of personal values as well as the design process, construction detailing, and architectual history. The house is extremely interesting in terms of the design and the planned execution of the unique details required by the rigid geometry of the octagonal plan. However, in this paralleling contemporary era of the passing of vogue of McMansions, Longwood stands as an example of the balance that must be struck between luxurious accomodations and rational decisions even for the most priviledged client. It is interesting to analyze the impulse inherent in all of us to aspire to grandiosity, to build our own Versailles, Blenheims, Biltmores, and Longwoods. What do we really want? What do we really REQUIRE? What is the tangible form these desires dictate whether it be 30,000 sqare feet or 3,000 sq ft?
The home exudes an air of "if only..." If one must choose between the many homes available for tour, this should be one of the options.

I, similar to another reader, was born in Mound Bayou. My oldest daughter was born in the Taborian Hospital also. When I was born, this was a time when MOST blacks were born at home by mid-wives. I was from Arcola and competed in spelling bees there as a kid during my mother's membership in the Knights and Daughters of Tabor. I visited Mound Bayou on May 8, 2010 while attending a graduation down in Cleveland. Even though it is not like it used to be, I was impressed with the City Hall Building and the presence of a structured government. Hopefully, Mound Bayou will be around many more years so that some of us natives will continue to enjoy its legacy. Even with my humble start in the Mississippi Delta and challenges along the way, I have enjoyed some prosperity and very proud to call Mound Bayou my starting point in life!

Would you ever consider to display some pictures of Mound Bayou on the website. I read something about Mound Bayou in a book about plantations and I would enjoy viewing a few pictures of the city.

I am from Moorhead Mississippi another historical small city. I just wish our state and federal government cared about historical places like Mound Bayou, Moorhead, Baird and other small cities or towns. They have slowly dying away along with their history especially the Blues history of the area. Our politician doesn't seem to care, local, state, or Federal. No job is the main culprit, lack of capital.
As I write this I am in Greece employed by an American company, I will definitely return home to the Mississippi Delta to live once my overseas assignment is complete.
Companies, Wealthy people, invest in the Mississippi Delta.

I am totally intrigued in finding answers to my family history. I think my Grandfather was born in Mount Bayou, but I know a great Aunt and Uncle lived there. My first train ride as a small child was to Mount Bayou with my Grandmother. Is there/was there ever a college in Mount Bayou?

Longwood is one of the most interesting pieces of history I have ever seen. I will be going back today to take my 87 year old mother--it's a part of history she needs to see. We live about 2 hours from Natchez and it is well worth the drive. The entry price is very affordable. It's a good family attraction. Today will be my 3 visit.

My family hosted a birthday celebration there this weekend for my mother. It was wonderful. This place is absolutey amazing. When I was a little girl playing with my cousins on Monroe street, we used to pass by and Mr. Oakes would be setting on the porch, I was so scared, because back then the house was brown in color and scary looking; I had no idea I would someday go through those double doors. If anyone ever travels to Y.C, stop by the musuem for a small tour. They are in the process of repairing, but there is still so much to see.

We have been to Natchez on about six different occasions. Had never visited Longwood until this past weekend. This was no doubt my most fasinated and enjoyable tour. My daughter and son-in-law came with us and now they are hooked on touring homes.

This was the best information I've found about Mound Bayou. My great grandfather Jack Vence was born there as well as my grandmother Leola (Nancy Vence) Wilson. I am really fascinated about any information concerning my family tree. I hope to one day visit there and find out more info and maybe even find some relatives. Thank You So Much!
Hi Molly,
What a great opportunity for you and your class. I have forwarded the request on to the museum and asked them to contact you directly to help you set up your tour.
Enjoy the adventure, I'm sure you will learn a great deal about the Mississippi Delta and the music that makes it such a special place.

Greetings,

I am a junior at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, MS and my Future Studies class is conducting an in-depth study of the Mississippi Delta. My personal area of interest is the art and how it reflects the culture of the Delta. My class is planning a three day field trip to the Delta area in early April and it is my responsibility to make contact with someone who might be able to give us a tour and background of a museum of the arts. I hoped that the Delta Blues Museum might be the right place to go. If someone could please E-mail me at mb3131@students.rcsd.ms that would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Molly Brantley

To hold a wedding at the plantation you may call Bonnie Woodard at the Carriage House 601-445-5151 about weddings at Longwood or Stanton Hall. For weddings in other Natchez mansions, plus Bed & Breakfast info, rehearsal dinner sites, etc. call 800-647-6742 or 601-446-6631.

Just a suggestion. The number shown for the Natchez Trace Parkway is in the administrative section of the Parkway, normally for business use. The visitor center or information desk for the Parkway is (662) 680-4027. Either one will be answered but if a visitor information request, it will be forwarded to the "4027" number. Thank you.
