The Natchez Trace Parkway is a 444-mile road that stretches from the southwestern corner of Mississippi diagonally across the state, through the northwest corner of Alabama, and into Tennessee in the north. This picturesque limited access two-lane road guides countless travelers through the state each year.
Those who travel along the road will find that there are a great many different things to see and do, including a number of historical sites to visit. Some of the most popular sights along the Natchez Trace Parkway are the Meriwether Lewis National Monument, the Mount Locust Stand, and the Ridgeland Crafts Center, which can be found in Ridgeland, Mississippi. You can also stop at the Tupelo National Battlefield and the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site.
The Mount Locust stand is a historical inn and plantation that was built during the time of the Revolutionary War. People can visit the home and tour the grounds as well. On the grounds, they can explore the walking paths and find a brick kiln, the family cemetery, the slave cemetery, slave quarters and more. Also popular for tourists is the Meriwether Lewis National Monument, which is located at the north end of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Everyone will also want to stop at the Ridgeland Crafts Center to see all of the different locally made items. You can find just about everything you would want here, from jewelry and carvings to beautiful, old-fashioned quilts.
The battlefields located along the Parkway also offer great opportunities for families and individuals to explore and learn about the history of the great state of Mississippi. Both the Tupelo National Battlefield and the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site played important roles in the nation’s history.
In addition to all of the historical places that visitors along the Natchez Trace Parkway can stop and explore, people will enjoy quite a few outdoor activities as well. Some of the most popular outdoor activities are hiking and biking along the trails, camping, horseback riding, and fishing. Also, visitors can find a number of programs led by rangers, who can give them insight into the flora and fauna of the area.
